Jacques Audiard’s first Spanish-language film
Story
In Mexico, a lawyer receives an unexpected offer to help a feared cartel boss retire and disappear forever. She will become the woman she always dreamed of being. Karla Sofia Gascón talks about the two years of preparation that took this demanding role in Jacques Audiard’s film and the two extremes of her own personality that she had to portray as Emilia and Manitas. The French title card misspells the Indian city as “Delhi”. Featuring Latino Slant: La Bamba Remake, Tarantino on Big Mouth, Spice of Jenna & Selena shock! (2024). The Allegation Written by Camille, Clement Ducol and Jacques Audiard Performed by Zoe Saldana. I came to write this after seeing its gala screening at the London Film Festival.
It’s a great show of our time
A wild, insane roller coaster of a movie that combines crime, comedy, musical and thriller into one and succeeds brilliantly! The four actors at the core are a strength and Audiard directed them to perfection. Karla plays her pre-transition and post character as it comes naturally to her, but she has publicly undercut it as an actress. I’m proud to live in a time where a trans actor plays a trans role. And not only that, he nails it. The tragedy of leaving a life, but the promise of a life he will always need. Zoe gets to sing, dance, cry and laugh and everything an actress dreams of, let alone in one movie. I had never seen a movie of hers before and I am so glad this was my first because she is brilliant!
And she has a beautiful voice!
There’s a scene where she’s in the car where she realizes what just happened, she breaks down in hysterics. Think Margo in Me, Tonya or Glenn in Dangerous Liasons. This scene alone should win him an Academy Award. Selena, who I was most excited for when I saw this movie, kicks it out of the ballpark. Introduces the crowd, a woman like the woman beneath that icy, tempestuous surface that needs to be revisited IMO because as a young girl who endured intense scrutiny and then went through psychosis, she knows all too well what' ;s what I like to think lid on for too long. At one point during the show, I felt like I was having an out-of-body experience where her character Jessi finally lets her emotions out to us the audience after years of repression. There’s pain and anger in his voice. It’s a testament to why she has said acting is her true calling and how passionate she is about it.
He is touching!
It would be foolish to still think that he is a Disney kid and still has something to prove. His acting journey is really exciting as a fan of almost 2 decades. Finally, Adrianas’ character is like a ray of sunshine in the otherwise dark and twisted world that the movie lives in. And it perfectly complements the work of the other three actors. He brings love and softness to the story with his work. One important thing to note is that this movie is like an opera. It resembles one of Cherbourg’s umbrellas, which was also almost entirely sung. Emotionally, it’s definitely more intense than one, with little quiet moments where you find yourself watching a movie.
The description was great
At the end of the film, Selenas character lies almost unconscious in the passenger seat as her lover drives away in a rage. The way the camera pans across the car to his face… it felt like a painting, very poetic yet tragic. I’m so glad I got to watch it before it was released on Netflix. It’s amazing when a movie can make you feel this way. To get you out of the ordinary and make you a little crazy… You don’t have to waste time scrolling endlessly – here’s a whole selection of new movies and TV shows streaming on Netflix this month.
