Ernest Cole was one of South Africa’s first black freelance photographers. His early photographs, shocking at the time of their first publication, revealed to the world the life of black people during apartheid. Cole fled South Africa in 1966 and lived in exile in the United States, where he photographed extensively in New York City and the United States.
